  1. Medieval Latin `the pure' member of a sect in
  2. medieval Europe usually numbered among the
  3. Christian heretics. Influenced by
  4. Manichaeism, they started about the 10th
  5. century in the Balkans where they were called
  6. `Bogomils', spread to SW Europe where they
  7. were often identified with the Albigenses,
  8. and by the middle of the 14th century had
  9. been destroyed or driven underground by the
  10. Inquisition. The Cathars believed that this
  11. world is under the domination of Satan, and
  12. men and women are the terrestrial embodiment
  13. of spirits who were inspired by him to revolt
  14. and were driven out of heaven. At death, the
  15. soul will be reincarnated (whether in human
  16. or animal form) unless it has been united
  17. through the Cathar faith with Christ. For
  18. someone who has become a Cathar, death brings
  19. release, the Beatific Vision, and immortality
  20. in Christ's presence. Baptism with the spirit
  21. - the consolamentum - was the central rite,
  22. believed to remedy the disaster of the Fall.
  23. The spirit received was the Paraclete, the
  24. Comforter, and it was imparted by imposition
  25. of hands. The Believers, or Credentes, could
  26. approach God only through the Perfect (the
  27. ordained priesthood), who were implicitly
  28. obeyed in everything, and lived lives of the
  29. strictest self-denial and chastity.
